VS1, VS2 or VVS: diamond clarity explained
Clarity describes internal inclusions and external characteristics. Laboratory grades use magnification; they do not guarantee the unaided appearance of an individual stone.
What changes visually?
VS1 means Very Slightly Included 1: minor inclusions are difficult for a skilled grader to see at 10×. VS2 follows below it; VVS1 and VVS2 sit above it. Number alone does not determine the grade: size, nature, position and visibility matter. Ask for a video of the actual stone and an assessment at normal viewing distance.
What does that mean for price?
A rare high clarity grade can cost more without an everyday visual difference. “Eye-clean” is not a standard laboratory grade. Ask what lighting and distance support that description. Significant characteristics may also affect durability or transparency.
